“I know how hard it is when a pet dies, and I’m sorry it happened. Mourn as long as you need, but know that one day you’ll go from being sad every time you think about your pet to smiling about how wonderful it was to have it.”

—the death of a pet

11

We bought Bri a fish. Goldie was her name. She was a big, wonderful, loving fish who brought an abundance of happiness into our home…for forty-eight hours. Just two days after Goldie became part of our family, after we’d put Bri to bed that night, Jeff and I found Goldie belly up in her bowl. Despite unsubstantiated rumors of foul play, a thorough investigation determined she died of natural causes.

And Jeff was freaking out about it.

It wasn’t so much that Goldie was dead—I was able to console Jeff about that. (Though he really did spend a lot of time on Google that night trying to figure out why she died. My theory of “Dude, it’s a five-dollar goldfish; it’s what they do” was not taken seriously.) What he was freaking out about was that we had to somehow tell a four-year-old that her brand-new pet, who had become the love of her life the moment Goldie was randomly scooped out of a store aquarium and plopped into a clear plastic bag, was gone. Our dog, Mitzie, whom Jeff and I had had for several years, died when Bri was three, but Goldie’s death was a little different. Bri was now a year older, and Goldie had been her pet, chosen by her and kept in her room.
